A loud knock on their office’s door made the siblings stopped from their work.
“Come in,” announced Kiku.
It swung open and entered with lazy steps was their beloved Uncle Fran. The youths looked at each other before returning their attention to the emerald-haired man.
“Uncle Fran, aren’t you supposed to be in Varia base right now?” the navy haired one asked.
“Wouldn’t Uncle Bel get mad if he found you nowhere in their mansion?” the white haired one inquired.
Fran rolled his eyes. “It’ll be alright. I actually came here to inform you,” he glanced at Alba, “regarding our next training schedules. But I met with Spanner on my way here and he asked me to give it,” he lifted a medium-sized crate and put it down on Kiku’s desk, “to you.”
The young mafia boss eyed the box curiously. “From Uncle Spanner? What’s inside?”
“Who knows? He didn’t tell me anything.”
While Kiku observed the box carefully, the illusionist approached his little disciple, who was sitting on a couch in that office—he was waiting until his big brother finished his paperwork because they’ll go to an amusement park later—and told him about their training menus and their practice days. Alba simply nodded at Fran’s explanations. He had strong memory, so he didn’t really need to take a note or anything.
When the older man left the office, the six-year old albino hopped off his couch and came to his brother’s side. Kiku had managed to open the box right before the ex-Mist Guardian (Alba claimed the title now) left, and he had been having this longing expression on his face.
“Kiku? What’s inside?” Alba tiptoed in attempt to look into the box, with no avail.
The navy haired teen smiled at his younger brother and lifted him from the ground, placed Alba to sit down on his laps. From that position, he could see clearly the contents of the box. A plastic pouch with four different kind of withered flowers in it, a white teddy bear, a black medium-sized cube with lock, and another box with Gesso emblem imprinted on it.
“This is,” the older of the two began, “a time capsule, buried when you were two years old.”
When he was two years old? Then it was about four years ago? The young illusionist was about to ask the details to his brother, but decided against it when he found a terms that he didn’t know. “What's a time capsule?”
“Yes. Basically, you gathered something into a box, and then you buried the box into the ground. Then years later, when you have a reunion or something, you can open it and reminisce about old times.”
“I see…” Alba peeked into the crate once again before he looked up at Kiku. “Which one is Kiku’s?”
The mafia boss grinned and took out the flower pouch. “This one's mine.”
“Why did Kiku put these flowers in it?”
“Because they represented our family... White orchids for Papà, hyacinths for Mamma, blue chrysanthemums for me and white roses for you.”
The white haired boy eyed the flower pouch with interest. He finally noticed that the four kinds of flowers were indeed orchids, hyacinths, chrysanthemums, and roses. He couldn’t tell what color they used to have, but he was sure that those flowers were beautiful, four years ago.
“Here, you even contributed something too.”
Kiku took out the white teddy from the crate and handed it over to his younger brother. “This was actually my first gift to you, when you were born. I was kinda shocked when I found out that you put it into the box. I thought you hate me.”
Hearing that, Alba shook his head hastily. “I could never bring myself to hate Kiku,” he said, hugging the teddy tightly.
The navy haired teen laughed and ruffled the younger’s silky hair. The boy looked inside the crate and eyed the two boxes that were lingering on the bottom. “Kiku, do Papà and Mamma contributed those boxes?”
“Hm? Oh yeah. I didn’t get to ask them what they put in there. Would you like to see?”
“Of course...!”
Kiku took out the boxes and placed them on his desk, pushed the crate away so it could have some free space left. Alba continued staring at those boxes with interest. He reached out for the black box and was about to open it, before he realized and looked up at his big brother.
“Can you open the other’s box too?”
“Huh? Why?”
“Let’s see what’s inside together.”
The teen smiled and nodded. He took the box, and with an affirmative nod, the siblings opened the boxes in the same time. Both boys’ jaws dropped. In the box were their mother’s Hell Rings and their father’s family crest. It shined beautifully, because it hadn’t touched the free air since four years ago.
“This is…Mamma’s and Papà’s most precious valuables!” Alba exclaimed. “Why did they put into the time capsule?”
“…so that’s why Mamma died…”
At the statement, the young illusionist glanced at his brother. His beautiful countenance had changed into a mellow one. He was reminiscing about something saddening, and though he wouldn’t admit it, he was trying to hold back his tears.
“Kiku…?”
“No wonder that the strongest Illusionist ever alive was murdered easily. Mamma kept his Hell Rings in here! He wouldn’t stand a chance fighting those assassins from Incubo famiglia if he counted on his Eye’s alone!”
Alba didn’t understand what Kiku was mumbling about, but he knew that it has something to do with the Hell Rings that they found in the black box just now. Deciding to comfort him later, his cobalt eyes traveled to his brother’s hand, which was holding the other box still. The Gesso famiglia crest was there. It was an official token; a proof that whoever possessed it means that he was the famiglia’s legal successor.
Recalling something, he took the crest from the box and attached it on the navy haired teen’s shirt collar. This caused Kiku to look down at his little brother, frowning slightly.
“This is yours,” the boy said, “You’re the legal successor of Gesso famiglia now. Perhaps Papà put it in the time capsule because he knew you’ll succeed his position.”
Taking Alba’s words into consideration, the young mafia boss couldn’t help but to smile a little. Perhaps he was right. Perhaps their parents had oversee their future, or at least having a hunch that they wouldn’t be able to protect their children any longer, so they put in their most precious valuables into the time capsule, so none would snatch them away. So in the future, their children will find it again and put those things to use.
Seeing that Kiku was no longer sad or holding back his tears, the young illusionist smiled as well. The smile resemble their mother very much that it made his big brother remembered something. Kiku took the Hell Rings from the black box and slid them around Alba’s thumbs—because he was still so young, the ring could only fit around his thumbs.
“There you go,” the teen grinned, “With these, I’m sure you can follow Mamma’s steps becoming the strongest illusionist, beat Nagisa and Jill, even!”
The younger of the two nodded happily and hugged his brother tightly. The teen mafia boss could only laugh and ruffled his brother’s hair once again. He lifted Alba from his lap and carried him into his arms, before he got up from his chair.
“Where are we going?”
“Amusement Park, right? I’ve finished my paperwork, so let’s have fun to celebrate your birthday.”
“…Hn!”
