After three months since their initial meeting, Defteros had learned many things about Asmita. From the basic, like his job as the chef of a rather well-known Indian Restaurant as a way to recompense him living with his managers, to his personality traits, one of them being that the blond is such a perfectionist that there was this one time where they went to an ice cream shop after buying a new cellphone and he repeatedly fix the position of his toppings before he deemed it delectable enough to be eaten.
Speak of cellphone, he had also discovered that Asmita had a habit of breaking his cellphones every now and then. The explanation that he provided was that he actually had a great amount of strength and since he never owned a cellphone prior to meeting Defteros, he had a hard time adjusting his power when he handled the electronic gadget. Thus the phones he bought were either snapped into halfsies or had some parts like the screen or the keyboard dented beyond repair.
Defteros once suggested that maybe they should change the strategy and have Asmita listens to iPod instead, but the latter adamantly refused, saying that he likes phones better.
"Beside, that way I can communicate with you," was included among things that the Indian chef listed when he was asked for his reasoning of choosing phones over iPods.
It was spoken in the volume just barely above whisper, so Defteros wasn't sure if he heard it right or not.
He wished he didn't hear it wrong, though.
Anyway, he was thinking of calling Asmita as he walked down one of the roads in Forest Hills. He had just finished a reporting the result of his investigation to a client who lived in the neighborhood and intended to visit the Theater Cafe located not too far from the client's residence, so he went there.
And he saw Asmita standing in front of the movie theater. To be specific, in front of poster boards that inform people about which movies are showing and which movies are going to be available sometime in the future.
Defteros thought he was tired and his eyes were tricking him, but, no, that was really Asmita there, wearing his favorite cream-colored cardigan. He even turned around as Defteros continued to ponder whether it was really him or not, seemingly noticing the blue haired man's stare.
"Deft," he approached the standing still detective, "surprise seeing you here. Went to a client's place?"
"Huh? Oh... y-yeah," Defteros stuttered a bit, which he quickly regretted because he knew he sounded like an idiot for a second there. "And you? Why are you here?"
"There's this movie, a remake of an old Japanese film, that will be premiered here tomorrow. I went to ask if I can get some tickets to attend it, but ."
The taller of the two mouthed an "oh" and they went all silent again, just standing in front of each other as people walked past them. Asmita was silent because he didn't really have anything else to talk about and seemed to be content enough with the silence between them, while Defteros seemed to wonder about something and only speak again after he remembered something. Immediately his hands went into his pocket pants, trying to fish out something and finally succeeded in doing so after one or two minutes.
"The movie that you were talking about... is this, right?"
Held in his hand was two tickets of the movie that Asmita spoke of. They were slightly crumpled because he just literally shoved them into his pocket when he got them, but they were still valid tickets.
"Got them just now from a client... she actually wanted to go to this premiere with her boyfriend, but, well..." He shrugged lightly. "Anyway, you can have this. T-that is, if... if you don't mind."
And again Defteros mentally cursed himself for fumbling with his words on the last sentence. But he didn't get to self-depreciate himself for too long, because Asmita took the tickets from his hands, smoothed the paper so it looks better, and gave the other man a smile. Just a thin stretch on each corner of his lips, but it was enough to make the investigator's stomach fluttered.
"Thank you very much. Cardinale and Shijima will certainly feel happy with this."
Another silence.
"... Huh?"
