"... seven, and eight. Alright."
Kirsch lightly nodded as he finished counting all daggers that he had just cleaned up.
Because the airship in which he rode on doesn't provide a service where the passengers can rent cats to spend time with, and the light is still too bright for stargazing, cleaning and polishing his weapons became his choice of method to waste the time away.
Looking through the small window of his cabin, Kirsch can see that the airship is getting closer and closer to the floating lands of Therondia. What at first appeared to be mere dots up high in the sky now he can see with much clarity. He estimated that the airship will land at the airport in less than half an hour, which means he should start getting ready to leave.
After repacking his belongings ― which makes him looks like an ordinary passenger, with how all of his weapons are hidden all over his body, invisible to untrained eyes ― Kirsch walked out of his cabin. It just so happened that the passenger occupying the cabin next to his also stepped out from the room at the same time, and they ended up met each other's eyes.
It has become his habit to automatically put up a smile whenever his gaze suddenly meet someone else's, and this time is no exception. The other passenger smiled in return. ― No, actually, he took it as a sign that he can actively talk up to him.
"Hello there! Heading to Therondia for a job offer too?"
Too.
The question might be one of the most heard question within this airship, considering most of its passengers are basically migrant workers who came from all over the world to fill in positions left empty due to the last war.
Kirsch briefly scanned the other person's appearance. Lightly armored and carries a lute on his back. A bard.
"That's right," he answered, finally, with an amiable smile still hanging on his lips. "Are you recruited for the military, or...?"
"Yeah, I'm to get enlisted in the military! I was hesitating at first, since it doesn't suit my original lifestyle. But the offer is so tempting, you know?"
The bard made a hand gesture which expressed that he got his eyes on the salary. He looked so smug about it that Kirsch can't help but laugh.
"We're the same then, sir. I, too," he made the same gesture, grinning ear to ear, "came because the pay lured me in."
He wasn't really lying. The amount offered is pretty mouthwatering for vagrants... his identity that he will use during his time working in that land.
The bard seemed happy that he found one of his 'kind' and immediately acted so friendly with Kirsch. Only after they moved to chat in a wider hallway, where many other passengers hang around because of the full glass walls lined up at one side allowed them to have a view of the sky outside, that he regretted had giving his attention to that man.
Because he talks a lot. Like, really a lot.
"―... hope I'm placed at the rearmost! After all, I'm just a fragile minstrel... Ah, but of course, if someone needs my supportive music, then I'll give it my all to help!"
"Hee~" Even after Kirsch dropped his polite facade, the bard still chattered away.
"You should also use the best of your capabilities to survive, Brother. It's not our homeland after all."
Too tired to make a verbal response, Kirsch just put up another smile. He thought: keep that advice to yourself, dude.
The bard opened his mouth again, ready to start talking about another topic. But the announcement that echoed throughout the whole airship, letting all of its passengers know that they're about to land in a few minutes, effectively silenced him. Kirsch secretly did a fist pump. Finally, he'll be freed from this chatterbox.
"Too bad, it's time for us to part." The bard once again talked to him when the airship had successfully landed at the airport and they, together with the other passengers, waited for the stairs to be let down. "If by any chance we meet again in the battlefield, let's help out each other, okay?"
Kirsch actually wanted to say, nope nope nope.
But he thought about it again. The possibility for them to meet again should be very tiny. And so he decided to be friendly to the bard for the last time, putting up a super bright smile.
"Sure."
That is, if you're still alive by then ― he added in his mind as he laid his feet on Therondia for the first time.
